On a five-day Zimbabwe safari, the journey typically opens at Victoria Falls, where travelers stand before the thundering curtain of mist and spray that gives the falls their local name, “Mosi-oa-Tunya” or “The Smoke That Thunders,” perhaps adding a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River to watch hippos and elephants drink along the banks while the sky turns amber, before flying into Hwange National Park for days two and three, where dawn and dusk game drives in open 4×4 vehicles reveal massive elephant herds gathering at waterholes, prides of lions resting in the shade of mopane trees, and perhaps the rare sighting of painted wild dogs darting through the grass, with quiet hours back at camp spent on a shaded deck overlooking a floodlit pan where buffalo and giraffe wander after dark; day four often shifts to Mana Pools or the Matobo Hills for something different, whether a walking safari guided by an armed ranger tracking fresh lion prints through the riverine forest, or a hike among ancient granite boulders to find ochre-painted Bushman rock art and, with luck, a resting leopard, before the final day winds down with a relaxed breakfast, perhaps a stop at a curio market for hand-carved wood and stone crafts, and a transfer back to Victoria Falls or Harare for departure, leaving visitors sunburned, dust-covered, and quietly reshaped by having watched Africa’s wildest landscapes unfold at their own unhurried pace.
