10 DAYS EXPLORING THE WONDERS OF ZAMBIA

South Luangwa National Park Deep in eastern Zambia, the Luangwa Valley feels like the Africa of a century ago. The park pulses with life — oxbow lagoons shimmer with hippos, leopards drape themselves across fever trees, and at dusk, thousands of buffalo darken the plains like a slow-moving storm. This is the birthplace of the walking safari, where you track animals on foot with nothing but a guide and your senses. Nights here are something else entirely — spotlights catching glowing eyes in the dark, the bark of baboons, the distant whoop of a hyena.

National Park Vast, wild, and gloriously undervisited, Kafue is Zambia’s best-kept secret. Covering 22,500 square kilometres — roughly the size of Wales — it stretches from dense miombo woodland to the open, flooded Busanga Plains in the north. Those plains are where the magic concentrates: cheetahs sprint across golden grass, red lechwe bound through shallow water, and lion prides laze in the morning sun. Because Kafue draws far fewer tourists than East African parks, you often have the wilderness entirely to yourself.

Lower Zambezi National Park Pressed against the northern bank of the great Zambezi River, this park offers a safari experience unlike any other — from the water. Climb into a canoe and paddle silently past elephants drinking at the river’s edge, crocodiles basking on sandbanks, and hippos eyeing you with mild suspicion. The escarpment rises dramatically behind the camps, creating a stunning natural amphitheatre. As the sun drops, the river turns copper and gold, and the sounds of the African bush close in around you.

Lake Kariba Straddling the Zambia-Zimbabwe border, Lake Kariba is a place of haunting beauty. Created in 1958 by the Kariba Dam, it stretches nearly 300 kilometres, its waters dotted with the skeletal silhouettes of drowned trees — eerie, beautiful, and unlike anything else on the continent. Spend a night on a houseboat watching elephants wade along the shoreline as the sun melts into the lake in an explosion of orange and crimson. The silence here is profound — just water, sky, and the occasional splash of a tiger fish.

Victoria Falls Nothing prepares you for Victoria Falls. You hear it before you see it — a deep, rolling thunder that shakes the ground beneath your feet. Then the mist rises above the treeline like smoke from a wildfire, and suddenly you’re standing at the edge of a 1.7-kilometre wide curtain of water plunging 108 metres into a churning gorge below. The Kololo people named it Mosi-oa-Tunya — The Smoke That Thunders — and no description does it justice. You will get soaked. You will not care. It is one of the most astonishing sights on Earth.

Day 1: Arrival in Livingstone & The Zambezi Sunset

    • Morning: Arrive at Livingstone International Airport (LVI). Your private lodge vehicle will transfer you to the riverbank.

    • Afternoon: Settle into your suite. Enjoy a private lunch on a deck overlooking the Zambezi.

    • Evening: A Luxury Sunset Cruise on a small, private boat. Sip Gin & Tonics while spotting hippos and elephants crossing the river against a fiery African sky.

    • Lodge: Royal Chundu (Island Lodge) or The Royal Livingstone.

    • Meals: Lunch & Dinner at the lodge.

Day 2: The Smoke That Thunders

    • Morning: A private guided tour of Victoria Falls. Walk the rainforest paths to see the Main Falls and the Boiling Pot.

    • Midday: A 15-minute "Flight of Angels" helicopter tour to see the 1.7km wide curtain of water from above.

    • Afternoon: Visit a local Mukuni Village for a cultural exchange or take a dip in Devil’s Pool (if visiting between August and January).

    • Evening: A 4-course fine dining experience at the lodge or the Old Drift Lodge for a bush-style dinner.

    • Lodge: Same as Day 1.

    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 3: The Flight to the Wild (South Luangwa)

    • Morning: Transfer to Livingstone Airport for your light aircraft flight to Mfuwe (usually via Lusaka).

    • Afternoon: Meet your South Luangwa guide. Even the 1-hour drive to the lodge is a game drive—keep an eye out for elephants and giraffes.

    • Evening: Your first Night Game Drive. South Luangwa is the "Valley of the Leopard"; using spotlights, your tracker will search for these elusive cats.

    • Lodge: Chinzombo (Time + Tide) or Puku Ridge.

    • Meals: Breakfast (Livingstone), Lunch & Dinner (South Luangwa).

Day 4: The Birthplace of the Walking Safari

    • Morning: Rise at 5:30 AM for a Walking Safari. This is Zambia’s specialty. Accompanied by an armed scout, you’ll learn to track lions by their prints and identify medicinal plants.

    • Afternoon: Relax by the pool during the heat of the day. South Luangwa lodges often have "elephants in camp" during the dry season.

    • Evening: Afternoon game drive transitioning into a night drive. Look for the endemic Thornicroft’s Giraffe.

    • Lodge: Same as Day 3.

    • Meals: Full Board.

Day 5: Deep Into the Bush (Remote Camp)

    • Morning: A game drive transfer to a more remote "Bush Camp" deeper in the park. These camps are smaller (usually only 4–6 tents) and offer a raw, disconnected experience.

    • Afternoon: Explore the Luangwa River banks. The concentration of hippos here is the highest in the world.

    • Evening: Dinner under the stars with a "Safari Storytelling" session around the fire.

    • Lodge: Mchenja Bush Camp or Bilimungwe.

    • Meals: Full Board.

    Day 6: Tracking the Predators

    • Morning: Focus on the "Big Five" (minus rhino, which are not in this park). The Luangwa Valley is famous for its Wild Dog (Painted Dog) populations.

    • Afternoon: Visit a photographic "hide" near a waterhole to get eye-level shots of wildlife without being seen.

    • Evening: Final night drive in the Luangwa sector.

    • Lodge: Same as Day 5.

    • Meals: Full Board.

Day 7: Transition to the Lower Zambezi

    • Morning: Fly from Mfuwe to a private airstrip in the Lower Zambezi National Park.

    • Afternoon: Arrive at your lodge, where the mountains of the Escarpment meet the massive Zambezi River.

    • Evening: A Sundowner Boat Cruise. The Lower Zambezi offers a "water-level" perspective of the animals that is incredibly peaceful.

    • Lodge: Chiawa Camp or Lolebezi.

    • Meals: Breakfast (Luangwa), Lunch & Dinner (Lower Zambezi).

    Day 8: Canoeing & Tigerfish

    • Morning: A Canoe Safari down the Chifungulu Channel. This is a quiet, drift-style safari where you paddle past elephants drinking at the water's edge.

    • Afternoon: Try your hand at Catch-and-Release Tigerfishing, one of Africa's most aggressive freshwater game fish.

    • Evening: Night drive to spot honey badgers, porcupines, and leopards.

    • Lodge: Same as Day 7.

    • Meals: Full Board.

    Day 9: The Sandbank Experience

    • Morning: A final 4x4 game drive into the winterthorn forests. The light here is a photographer's dream.

    • Midday: A Sandbank Lunch. Your guides set up a table and chairs in the middle of the shallow river. Eat a gourmet meal with your feet in the cool water.

    • Afternoon: Afternoon boat safari or a walking safari along the riverbank.

    • Evening: A celebratory farewell bush dinner.

    • Lodge: Same as Day 7.

    • Meals: Full Board.

Day 10: One Last Sunrise & Departure

    • Morning: A slow breakfast overlooking the river. If time permits, one last short morning activity.

    • Afternoon: Board your light aircraft for the 30-minute flight to Lusaka (LUN) to connect with your international flight home.

    • Meals: Breakfast & Lunch.
