On a five-day journey through Rwanda’s misty Virunga highlands, travelers begin in Kigali with a poignant visit to the Genocide Memorial before winding north through terraced hillsides to Musanze, gateway to Volcanoes National Park, where days two and three are devoted to the trek itself—rising before dawn, briefing with rangers over steaming coffee, then hiking through bamboo forest and stinging nettle slopes alongside porters and trackers until the moment a silverback’s enormous frame emerges from the foliage, surrounded by playful juveniles and watchful mothers, granting a single unforgettable hour in the company of one of Africa’s last mountain gorilla families; afternoons might include a visit to the Dian Fossey tribute trail, a community walk through Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village to experience traditional dance, basket weaving, and royal Rwandan customs, or a golden monkey tracking excursion through bamboo groves, before the final day brings a relaxed transfer back toward Kigali, perhaps pausing at Lake Kivu’s shoreline for a quiet moment of reflection, leaving visitors with muddy boots, full memory cards, and a profound sense of having witnessed something rare, fragile, and deeply moving in the heart of the Land of a Thousand Hills.
